about

All proceeds from the sale of this digital release will go to Wild Justice - which was set up by Mark Avery, Chris Packham and Ruth Tingay.
to fight for our wildlife.

Released on Monday 12th August, known as The Glorious 12th,
A Distant Call highlights why the date, which marks the start of the grouse shooting season, is far from glorious. Watch the video here for the lyrics, the inglorious facts and beautiful illustrations from Mia Underwood:

Brighton illustrator Mia has an impressive portfolio and recently worked with The Wildlife Trusts on their Wilder campaign - she kindly volunteered her time and talent to produce these illustrations for the track.

The track follows the release of The Artisans’ self-titled debut album in April which was described as "the most charming and quirky shimmering guitar pop” and rated by numerous publications as one of the guitar pop albums of the year.

lyrics

Lyrics...

Heather starts to grow
Money starts to sow
You see beauty, not the fire on the moor
Under foot desolation to endure

Black streams drain it dry
Lost into the sky
The bog, for peat’s sake, harder than before
The bog, for meat’s sake, grazed till it’s no more

And they danced
And I never knew they could dance
In moorlands
I’d never seen them dance

You watched it like a hawk
As it tumbled to the ground
The dancer of the sky
No chance to ask “Why?”
The distant call of guns, the beaters and the flags
The upper classes, the distant call

Lapwings will spread
As hares and grouse lie dead
In the rich man’s playground
Built upon the moor
That common land that he’s taken from the poor

There’s flooding in lowlands
And conflict in uplands
Land that you will never own
And a truth that you are never told

And they danced
And I never knew they could dance
In moorlands
I’d never seen them dance

You watched it like a hawk
As it tumbled to the ground
The dancer of the sky
No chance to ask “Why?”
The distant call of guns, the beaters and the flags
The upper classes, the distant call

You hide behind your smokescreens
Lessons never learnt
Prepare your shooting parties
Let the moors burn
